The Great Calorie Deception or Why are there fat doctors?

The amount of time a trainee doctor gets on nutrition whilst studying for a medical degree is less than 20 hours in a four year course. So how the hell can they tell anyone to reduce weight when they do not have sufficient knowledge of the subject they are dictating about? Basically - they can't.

The whole idea of getting rid of excess weight by reducing calories -  eat less/eat more - has a 99% failure rate. So what's the point of dieting - there isn't one. None at all. Forget dieting. It won't work.

Sure reducing calories will get rid of excess weight in the short term - but in the long term - all that has been lost - will return.

Remember the television program -'The Biggest Loser' - ? All that fat lost - became all that fat regained.....why?

It's all thanks to the out-dated idea that if you reduce calories and do more exercise you will lose your weight. Like I said, you will get rid of your fat for a while - but because of the way our bodies work - the weight will come piling back again.

And it makes no difference if you stick to your regime. And here's the reason.

Your body gets used to the level of food you take in, so in order to keep losing your weight you have to keep reducing your calorie in-take to keep getting rid of the fat.

And when the fat returns - it is blamed on your lack of willpower. Not only unfair - but untrue.

It is your hormones that are to blame.

But don't just take my word for it - listen to this guy Dr Jason Fung a nephrologist  (kidney specialist) from Toronto, Canada, explaining why ---

So which diet method does work long term?

Intermittent Fasting.

Some myths busted about IF.

Your muscles will waste away - wrong.

You will feel tired - wrong.

You will get depressed - wrong.

Your body will go into starvation mode and you won't lose weight - very wrong.

You will have more energy - right.

Your thoughts are clearer - right.

You feel happier -  right.

Your body will be able to cure itself - right.

Autophagy is a Greek word - literally translated as - self eating.

Fasting is an ancient cure method that works by using Autophagy - it allows the body to rid itself of dead cells that are harmful. It is why fasting is so beneficial to illnesses like, Diabetes, Arthritis, Cancer and a whole lot more.

I first found out about Intermittent Fasting from reading Jason Fung - but it was when I watched this film called The Science of Fasting - that I was blown away by the concept.

For me fasting isn't about reducing my weight - that said - I have dumped 14 pounds of excess fat since I started fasting.

So how does it work?

There are 3 methods -

#1 Eating within a specific time -  usually you eat in an 8 hour window. Then fast for 16 hours. This gives your body time to digest what you have eaten, and then get on with the serious business of destroying dead cells.

You can have any time frame you want. 9 to 5. 8 to 10 etc. It's entirely up to you. Just stick to eating only within those 8 hours.

You do that for 5 days then you eat normally. By normally I don't mean you binge on cheese burgers and french fries. You stay on your healthy regime - but you do not have to adhere to the 8 hour window.

#2 -  24 hour fasting. Drink only water or black coffee or clear tea for 24 hours. I fast for this length of time on average 2 to 3 times a month.

# 3 - Prolonged fasting. From 24 hours up to 3 weeks. If you are going to fast for longer than 3 days, you should do so under medical supervision.

I started fasting to rid myself of crippling arthritis.

My arthritis got so bad that there were times, days in fact, that I could do nothing but go to bed and try not to move.

Having practised fasting now for several months - I can honestly say that my arthritis is significantly reduced - from experiencing pain in practically every joint of my body, to the odd twinge in my right knee and left shoulder.

As to the excruciating pain in my spine? I am no longer troubled by it.

There are many clinics where you can go to fast. One is the Buchinger Clinic in Germany.
Buchinger Clinic
They have clinics across Europe including a clinic in Marbella, Spain.

It's a dream of mine to visit the clinic for a 3 week fast.

There is also a clinic in Siberia - mentioned in the film The Science of Fasting - but I can't find a website for it.

As there are so many websites dedicated to fasting - I decided to include the links I think are worth visiting.

If you want to downsize your weight - or you have health issues that are not being addressed by conventional methods - then do one thing this week and check out Intermittent Fasting - I thank heaven I did.

Please remember that fasting is not the same as suffering from Anorexia - you fast only for short periods of time - and then you go back to eating a sensible nutritious diet.
