things that go bump in the night
Ever woken up in the middle of the night by a strange sound with all the doors locked and no one there - thinking - "What was that?"
The creak of a floorboard?
The banging of a closed window?
The howl of wind that isn't there?
I once lived in a very old house that was terribly haunted. A ghostly figure would play the piano in the middle of the night. Lights would come on of their own accord. A chattering lady could be heard moving from room to room. Heavy footsteps up and down the stairs, and children's laughter in the hall, where no children were.
Not all haunted houses are old. I've lived in new houses where spirits came to visit.
Of course, it could be you causing things to go bump in the night, though probably not.
I was once asked to perform an exorcism for a recently widowed lady who had been having seances to connect with her dead husband. She wanted to know if he had crossed over and was happy where he was.
Be careful what you wish for - you might just get it.
What she hadn't been expecting was the knocks on her bedroom door in the small hours. She moved bedrooms, hoping to get away from the knocks. They followed her. She moved downstairs - so did the knocks. In desperation she called me. It didn't take me long to connect with the spirit responsible. Her husband. I blessed the house and asked him to stop his night-time visitations, as he was scaring his wife. The following day she phoned to tell me - all was now quiet.
Halloween is the time - when all the spooks and ghosts come out to play - or is it? Where do they all go the rest of the year? Maybe they are always with you? Maybe they watching you read this post? Or not. How can you know?
Do you feel chills running up and down your spine? It is often said that if you suddenly feel a cold spot then there is supernatural activity close by. Or you forgot to close a window? And it's merely a cold draught of wind.
The festival was a day to mark the end of summer and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on this night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead were blurred. On 31st October they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. With the onset of Christianity - many of the Celtic festivals and traditions were either incorporated into the Christian religion, such as Christmas or were banned as pagan rites.
Of course, today most people associate Halloween with people in the USA dressing up in costumes and children knocking on doors trick or treating.Which is much more fun than witches whizzing around on broomsticks causing mayhem - which they don't by the way. All the witches I know are very nice and would never dream of casting evil spells.
If on this Night of the Witches you are going to be safely tucked up at home - and want to enjoy a fright-fest of your own - filled with supernatural magic, demons and evil beings from the depths of the underworld - together with steamy sex and romance - then why not curl up with a good book............................
